Anesthesia workstations are among the most technically complex OR assets. When it's time to retire them, most facilities aren't sure what the process looks like or who to call. Here's what to expect.

Anesthesia machines are among the most technically complex assets in any OR — and when it's time to retire them, most facilities aren't sure what the process looks like or who to call.

Unlike simpler equipment, anesthesia workstations have multiple interdependent components that all affect condition: vaporizers, breathing circuits, scavenging systems, gas delivery modules, and integrated monitoring. A buyer who doesn't understand anesthesia equipment will either undervalue the system or create problems during pickup by not handling the gas systems correctly.

What buyers evaluate on anesthesia machines

Experienced medical equipment buyers look at vaporizer calibration certificates, the most recent PM and leak test documentation, breathing circuit and AGSS scavenging condition, gas hose assembly completeness, and whether the integrated monitoring options are functional. Facilities that have their PM documentation organized move through the process significantly faster.

What to do before the equipment leaves your OR

Make sure all vaporizers are drained and certified prior to pickup. Gas lines should be properly capped. Any integrated monitoring modules should be inventoried and included with the unit — removing them reduces value significantly. If you have the original service manuals, include them.

Single units vs. full OR packages

Surgery centers closing or upgrading full ORs get better outcomes selling the room as a package — anesthesia machine, OR table, surgical lights, and electrosurgical unit together — rather than piece by piece. Buyers of complete OR packages can move faster and the bundled value typically exceeds individual unit sales.

ProMed Source acquires anesthesia machines from hospitals and surgery centers across the country — single units and full OR packages. We handle logistics and documentation. Contact us for a free evaluation on your outgoing anesthesia equipment.
